In our spotlight on APAC series, we round up the latest developments across the region. This post looks at Thailand’s new Temporary Work Permit for non-Board of Investment, which allows certain foreign nationals to work legally while awaiting the issuance of their formal work permit following administrative or operational delays.
With effect from 1 July 2026, the Department of Employment has introduced Temporary Work Permit and is available to foreign nationals who have already received approval to work in Thailand but are unable to obtain their formal work permit immediately because of administrative or operational constraints. During this interim period, the temporary permit serves as official evidence of the holder’s legal authorisation to work until the formal work permit is issued. This measure has been introduced to address delays in the work permit issuance process and to help ensure that approved foreign workers can continue their employment without unnecessary interruption.
The introduction of the Temporary Work Permit allows eligible foreign nationals to begin or continue working without waiting for the formal work permit to be issued. For employers, the measure helps reduce delays in employee mobilisation, supports business continuity, and lessens the operational impact associated with administrative processing timelines.
