New eVisa Variants for India

In our spotlight on the APAC series, we round up the latest developments across the Asia Pacific Region. In this post, we look at the recent updates on India’s immigration processes – new e-visa categories.

Indian immigration has expanded four new e-visa categories that can now be applied online. These include: a transit visa, a visa for mountaineers, a visa for film or television crews, and a visa for travellers of Indian origin.

e-Transit Visa

This e-visa is intended for individuals making a stopover in India who have confirmed onward ticket. The e-Transit visa is a double-entry visa and is valid for 30days.

e-Mountaineering Visa

The newly introduced e-visa is intended for individuals going mountaineering or trekking in India. It is a single-entry visa valid for six months from date of approval. Individuals must first obtain a clearance document from the Indian Mountaineering Foundation.

e-Film Visa

The e-Film visa is intended for individuals participating in Indian films, series, or television programme. It is a multiple-entry e-visa that allows stays of up to one year from the date of approval. Individuals must submit a letter of authorization to the Indian Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for clearance.

e-Entry Visa

This e-visa is intended for travellers of Indian origin who do not have an OCI card (Overseas Citizen of India), or for children or spouses of Indian citizens or OCI cardholders. The e-Entry visa is a multiple-entry visa valid for three months from the date of first entry into India.

The online visa application system makes it easier and faster for foreign travellers applying for transit, film, mountaineering, or entry e-visas by removing the need for a consular visit.

Processing times typically range from 24 to 78 hours, which is much quicker than regular consular processing. This initiative supports the Indian government’s efforts to streamline immigration procedures, expand e-visa access, and make international travel to India more convenient.
