Malaysia: New Photograph Verification Processes

In our spotlight on APAC series, we round up the latest developments across the Asia Pacific Region.

Effective August 21, 2026, Malaysia officials have implemented a new photo-verification process for specific applications filed via the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) and Expatriate Services Division (ESD) systems.

For MDEC Applications

The changes require all photographs submitted with Employment Pass and related Dependant Pass applications to be verified through the eVISA portal, ensuring they match passport and supporting documents while complying with eVISA/MyVisa specifications. Verification is completed instantly and noncompliant photographs may delay the subsequent eVISA application.

For ESD Applications

A comparable photo verification process has been introduced. A key difference is that applicants and employers can reach the eVISA verification platform directly via a link found within the ESD portal.

This enhancement provides a more seamless process and forms part of Malaysia’s continuous efforts to improve the application process and minimise issues arising from non-compliant passport photos during the MyVISA application process.
