Youth Mobility Scheme

In January 2013 the Youth Mobility Scheme will be open again for Japanese nationals. There will be 1000 places available to Japanese nationals for the year 2013.

The Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme (YMS) replaced the UK working holidaymaker programme. YMS allows young people (between 18 and 31 years old) from participating countries to live, work and experience life in the UK for a period of up to two years. The country of nationality acts as the sponsor. Unlike other employment categories, applicants do not need a UK based sponsor.

Currently only nationals from the following countries are eligible to apply under the YMS:

  • Australia
  • Canada
  • Japan
  • Monaco
  • New Zealand
  • South Korea
  • Taiwan

Applications under the scheme cannot be submitted from within the UK. For Japanese nationals, if the application is successful the UK Border Agency in Manila will notify the application centre in the applicant’s country of residence (excluding the UK) that the applicant has been successful and an entry-clearance request can then be made.

In order to make a successful application applicants need to score 50 points on the points based assessment process as follows:

There are no restrictions on the kind of work that YMS visa holders can undertake, although they are not permitted to set up their own business, work in professional sports or work as a trainee doctor.
